Frequently asked questions

See some answers and information to questions you may have below.

Of course, you may always reach out to us for more info.

1: WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN MY PRIVATE LESSON?

Instructors tailor lessons specifically to the student and their interests. We understand there is a range of interests: some students want to learn to read music properly, some students want to simply jam, some students want to do it all. Conversations with your instructor will help in tailoring your lessons to achieve your goals. And of course, you can always discuss your goals with us before scheduling so we match you with the best fit instructor. At any point, you are welcome to discuss your lessons with your instructor and/or the administrative staff about material being learned. or if you have any questions.

2: DO LESSONS HAVE TO BE SCHEDULED AS WEEKLY?

To be a tuition student, we schedule lessons in the form of weekly recurring lessons on the same day and time. This is the most cost-effective option, secures your day and time slot, and scheduling priority is given to tuition students! However, you can choose to be a “lesson-by-lesson” student and schedule as wanted. Participation in Musical Ladder™ and our recitals are only open to tuition students.

3: HOW MUCH DO LESSONS COST?

  • For recurring students, our 30 minute lessons are $37.50 each, and 60 minute lessons are $75 each.

  • For lesson-by-lesson students, our 30 minute lessons are $45 each, and 60 minute lessons are $90 each.

4: HOW DO PAYMENTS WORK?

For Recurring Lessons: You will be auto drafted at the first of each month in conjunction with the duration of lessons you are taking. For weekly 30-minute lessons, it is $150 per month ($37.50/lesson), and for 60-minute lessons it is $300 per month ($75.00/lesson). Tuition is based on 4 lessons a month because you will receive 48 lessons a year. The monthly tuition does not go up or down to make accounting easier for everyone. For Lesson-by-Lesson: You will pay for each lesson when you schedule, and it follows the rates of $45 for 30 minute lessons, and $90 for 60 minute lessons. All lessons require a 48 hour notice to be scheduled.

5: WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION AND SCHEDULING POLICY?

For lessons missed by recurring tuition students, you have the option to choose between a group makeup or a video sent to you from your instructor. There is no limit to how many group makeup credits you can acquire, and they also never expire! Group makeup classes are scheduled monthly, and are an effective way to continue learning without missing a beat, help you not to lose money, and for us to maintain our busy schedule. Group makeups are an hour long and are workshop style. We do our best to maintain similar ages in the group makeup classes. Feel free to ask the ages of the other students who are signed up in the classes before signing up for one. Since your credits never expire, you can also choose to attend a different one. We are happy to offer these options to you since there are often situations beyond anyone’s control, such as weather, traffic delays, and emergencies.

To withdraw from lessons completely, simply fill out a withdrawal form by the 15th of your last month to not be charged for the next month. When a student withdraws, their lesson slot is given to another student who will benefit from it. If a student is going to miss a few lessons, it’s best to collect group makeup credits and/or video makeups to not lose their lesson slot(s). Students who withdraw also lose their Musical Ladder status and their recital slot.

For all other lessons and classes (including Lesson-By-Lesson students), we have a strict 48 Hour Notice policy for both cancelling and scheduling. This is to protect the time of our instructors and staff, and to maintain an orderly schedule. You can view more about this here: Cancellation and Scheduling Policy.

6: DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN RECITALS?

No; however, we encourage our students to participate to gain performance experience, and to celebrate their achievements and hard work. We expect students to prepare diligently for recitals, but we also celebrate all levels of artistry and musicianship. Recitals are designed to be a fun experience to celebrate accomplishments!

7: CAN I/MY CHILD TAKE LESSONS IN MORE THAN ONE THING?

Yes! Take as many different types of lessons as you’d like.

8: DO I NEED AN INSTRUMENT FOR LESSONS?

It depends on the lesson, but each student should invest in an instrument for practicing! We have many instruments available for lessons, so be sure to ask when scheduling your lessons if you need to provide an instrument. We can also point you to a local retailer who will give you the best deal for being a 601 Studios student!

9: IS 601 STUDIOS EVER CLOSED?

We close 4 weeks a year: Spring Break, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This gives our tuition students 48 lessons per year, and it’s why our tuition is based on an average of 4 lessons per month.

10: CAN I DROP A STUDENT OFF AND RETURN TO PICK THEM UP?

For students older than 9 years old, yes; however, we are not responsible for students during their time at the studio when they are not in their lesson. Students are welcome to sit in common areas and work on homework, read, play on their phones, etc., as long as they maintain an acceptable noise level for the environment of the studio. Please do not leave children at the studio for an unreasonable amount of time before and after lessons.

11: WHAT AGES CAN TAKE PRIVATE LESSONS?

All ages starting as young as 5 years old! Some things we offer may not be appropriate for all ages (such as Rock Band for a 5 year old), but if a student is willing and mature enough to begin lessons in a particular area, we are open to them beginning lessons with us.

12: WHERE CAN I SEE THE OTHER CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS YOU OFFER?

We will always post them here: Classes and Workshops

13: WHAT IS THE MUSICAL LADDER SYSTEM™?

We are proud to be a Musical Ladder school, and the only one in Mississippi! The Musical Ladder System™ is a unique tool we use to encourage students to practice by helping them set goals, and rewarding them for achievements. Each level of the Musical Ladder comes with a colorful wristband that has the name of their level, and some levels also come with trophies. As a musical school, we set “testing weeks” where students will test out their goals in their lessons, and be rewarded with their next wristband and/or trophy for achieving it! Students love collecting the wristbands, and it motivates them to work toward their goals. The Musical Ladder is open to all of our tuition students only.
