About The Director

If you’ve ever walked into 601 Studios, Music & Arts Academy, you’ve probably felt it right away- that mix of energy, creativity, and warmth that makes it more than just a music school. That atmosphere comes from its founder and director, Mitchell McGinnis, whose vision was simple: to create a place where students could grow as musicians and as people.

Mitchell’s love for teaching and performing began right here in Mississippi. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages from Mississippi College, where he discovered how communication, culture, and creativity all connect. Later, his passion for the voice led him to Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where he earned his Master of Voice Pedagogy — a degree that deepened his understanding of how people learn to sing and express themselves through music.

While living in Princeton, Mitchell worked at a thriving performing arts academy. It was there that he saw something special — students who couldn’t wait to come to lessons, families who felt at home, and teachers who collaborated like a family. That experience stayed with him. When he returned to Mississippi, he wanted to bring that same sense of joy and community to his own hometown.

So, during the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, he began planning. And in 2021, 601 Studios officially opened its doors in Jackson. The response from the community was incredible. What started as a small studio quickly grew, and today 601 Studios has two locations (Jackson and Gluckstadt), more than 30 teachers and staff, and a reputation as the top-rated music and arts academy in the area, with over 130 five-star reviews on Google.

Under Mitchell’s leadership, the 601 team meets regularly to share ideas, collaborate, and refine how they teach. That commitment to teamwork and excellence is what makes the academy so special — every teacher cares deeply about helping students thrive.

One of the programs closest to Mitchell’s heart is Homeschool Days, which gives homeschooled students a chance to connect, learn, and create together through music. It’s a joyful mix of education and community= a place where friendships form right alongside new skills.

Performance is also a cornerstone of the 601 Studios experience. Each year, the academy hosts two large-scale recitals, giving students the chance to perform on stage, celebrate their progress, and share what they’ve learned with friends and family. These events have become true highlights of the year- filled with excitement, encouragement, and pride for every student’s hard work.

Beyond running the studios, Mitchell stays active in the performing arts world. Since 2014, he has directed and coached show choirs, helping young singers find their confidence on stage. He’s also helped students write and record original songs, and has prepared performers for college auditions, pageants, and national competitions like American Idol and The Voice.

At the core of everything Mitchell does is one belief: music changes lives. Whether it’s a 5-year-old learning their first song or a senior preparing for the stage, his goal is to make sure every student who walks into 601 Studios feels inspired, supported, and proud of what they can accomplish.

For Mitchell, 601 Studios isn’t just a place to take lessons- it’s a community built on creativity, connection, and confidence. And every day, he’s grateful to share that with the families who make it all possible.
